Catholics Stand with Working Familes

While CEOs receive massive salaries and bonuses, working families struggle. The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) will reform our labor law and build a more fair economy; an economy that promotes families, values human life and serves everyone, not just the super rich. We need a labor law that honors all of our brothers and sisters, especially the most vulnerable. By supporting EFCA, we stand beside the workers who sweep our floors, who harvest our food and who build our homes. Join with us. Stand with working families. Support the Employee Free Choice Act.

Catholics Announce New Effort to Pass Employee Free Choice Act

Catholics United today unveiled a “Catholics for Working Families” campaign to help pass the Employee Free Choice Act, a law designed to protect workers who want to form a union from employer retribution. The initiative, launched with support from Pax Christi USA and Catholic Scholars for Worker Justice, includes a Web site (www.catholicsforworkingfamilies.org) that presents facts about the legislation, explains the place of workers' rights in the Catholic social tradition, and provides opportunities for grassroots supporters to engage elected officials and the general public. Catholics United also plans to launch a radio and print advertising campaign in key states to rally Catholic support behind the Employee Free Choice Act.

Fr. Thomas Massaro: Violations of workers' rights cannot go unchallenged

Writing in America Magazine, Fr. Thomas Massaro of the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College asks: "What is the religious angle on this issue? Most denominations in the United States eagerly affirm labor rights and express enthusiasm for the principle of free and fair collective bargaining. A review of the 2004 Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church shows that the support of Catholic social teaching for workers’ rights to organize is beyond dispute. From Pope Leo XIII to John Paul II, the right to form unions has been regarded as an indispensable element of economic justice."

Fr. George Schultze on the need for the Employee Free Choice Act

Before he became a Catholic priest Fr. George Schultze served as an agent for the Nation Labor Relations Board. During that time he saw first hand how broken our labor laws are. Fr. George is now a strong advocate for reforming our labor laws to better protect the dignity of all workers.
